As fall sports hit their stride, we're celebrating commitment, dedication, and the power of showing up—both in the classroom and on the court. This week, we're shining a spotlight on boys tennis as our Tides and Seahawks prepare for an exciting cross-district matchup. Plus, we're breaking down what it means to be a student-athlete and why attendance matters. Let's dive in!
|
There's something special about tennis. Whether you're playing singles or doubles, it's a mental chess match wrapped in athleticism, where every point matters and resilience is built one serve at a time. In singles, you stand alone on your side of the net, relying on your own skill and determination. In doubles, you share the court with a partner, learning to communicate, strategize, and trust each other in real time. Either way, your teammates are there—competing alongside you on other courts or cheering you on from the sidelines.

Mark your calendars! On Tuesday, October 14, our Gig Harbor Tides will host the Peninsula Seahawks at the GHHS Tennis Courts for what promises to be an exciting cross-district matchup. This is always one of the most anticipated matches of the season—community pride, friendly rivalry, and exceptional tennis all come together.
Coach Lorrie Wood has been leading the Tides, while Coach Cheryl Ausboe continues to build a strong Seahawks program. Both teams have been putting in the work all season, and Tuesday is when it all comes together. We hope to see you there supporting both teams as they compete with skill and sportsmanship. Good luck to both the Tides and Seahawks!

Being a student-athlete is a privilege and a responsibility. It means committing to excellence in two places: the classroom and their sport. Our attendance policy exists to support student-athletes in both areas and to build the life skills that will serve them long after their playing days are done.
|
Student-athletes must attend all scheduled classes on the day of a practice or competition. It's that simple—and that important. Whether they are learning in person, through remote options, or on a modified schedule, showing up to class is non-negotiable. Their education is the foundation of everything else they will accomplish.
Per Peninsula School District Policy 3122, attendance isn't just about being physically present. It's about being engaged, prepared, and committed to growth as a student and as an athlete.
|
Excused absences include:
- Illness
- Medical or legal appointments
- Family emergencies
- School-approved activities
If you have an excused absence, communication is key. Verify it in advance with the Attendance Secretary, Athletic Director, or building administrator. Written documentation may be required, and participation in that day's practice or competition will be determined on a case-by-case basis. We understand that life happens—we just need to know about it.
Unexcused absences include:
- Skipping class
- Leaving campus without permission
- Failure to attend scheduled classes without valid reason
Unexcused absences come with consequences because they break the commitment you made to your team, your coaches, and yourself.
|
When it comes to unexcused absences from practice or competition, here's what to expect:
1st Offense - Suspension from the next game, performance, or activity
2nd Offense - Suspension from the next two games, performances, or activities
3rd or More - Suspension from the next four games, performances, or activities
These consequences are about accountability and helping student-athletes understand that their presence matters to their team.
This policy is about preparing student-athletes for what comes next. In college, in careers, in life, people will count on them to show up. The habits they build now—reliability, communication, commitment—will serve them forever. We know they're balancing a lot. That's what makes being a student-athlete so impressive. And we're here to support them every step of the way.
