Remembering Colonel James J. Coolican, Former Superintendent of Peninsula School District

It is with profound respect and gratitude that we honor the life of Colonel James J. “Jim” Coolican, who passed away on October 25, 2024, at the age of 85. Superintendent Coolican served as superintendent of the Peninsula School District from 1999 to 2006, leaving a legacy of leadership, compassion, and dedication. Before his time with our district, he served our country as a highly decorated U.S. Marine Corps officer, where he received the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism. He was employed with the ESD 101 in Spokane from 1991 - 1997 as a prevention and intervention coordinator, and then director. He worked with OSPI as a Deputy Superintendent from July 1997 - June 1999.

Former board member Jill Johnson reflected on Superintendent Coolican’s impact: “Everything about Jim was authentic. He had a big heart, generous soul, and great compassion for the students and staff in our school district… Jim led our district just as he lived, with a sense of duty, focus on the issues at hand, and an eye towards future goals.”

Superintendent Coolican’s legacy in our community is one of equity, excellence, and academic achievement. Known for his calm presence, especially in challenging times, Col. Coolican was a mentor, a friend, and a steadfast advocate for education. His dedication to building strong relationships of support within the district and the larger community continues to have a lasting impact.

Superintendent Coolican will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to work with him. His commitment to serving others and his contributions to our district and country will never be forgotten. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in his name, continuing his legacy of support for our nation’s heroes.
